Avondhu Blackwater Partnership Welcomes Alan Kelly TD

Minister Alan Kelly TD with Damien Tobin Co-ordinator of the Rural Transport Programme

Avondhu Blackwater Partnership this welcomed Alan Kelly TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, to their offices in Fermoy. The company’s function is to provide funding and dedicated supports to local communities and as part of this, operates a dedicated Rural Transport bus service covering much of North Cork.

Rural Transport Programme Coordinator Damien Tobin commented this week, “We are delighted to welcome Alan Kelly TD to Avondhu Blackwater Partnership. He is the Minister responsible for the National Rural Transport programme and has a considerable interest in the Transport service we operate. As the Minister’s Department also covers tourism, we briefed him on our recently launched Heritage Tours that cover North Cork and which showcase the rich heritage that is on our doorstep”.

The Minister toured the offices of Avondhu Blackwater Partnership meeting board and staff members, and was briefed on the many services that the company administers, in addition to Rural Transport.

Damien continues, “In Avondhu Blackwater Partnership we seek to provide an integrated approach to meeting the challenges in our region and the Rural Transport Programme is central to much of this. For example it is used in conjunction with our Telephone Service to tackle the rural isolation experienced by local people. It shows the flexibility of the Service, how it has multiple uses and in our experience these are combinations we have found very successful.”
