retirement group specifically for men will meet for the first time at Fermoy Youth Centre on April 13th at 2.30pm. At this first meeting some rare footage of Christy Ring in action will be shown as well as the All-Ireland Hurling Final between Cork and Kilkenny in 1966. With a low turnout of men attending most community group activities throughout the Avondhu Blackwater Area it was decide that a group specifically for men would be set up in a number of towns and villages.
With a great sporting interest amongst Irish men it was considered that footage of vintage GAA hurling and football games would be screened, as they would interest most men. One such group has been set up in Conna and to date it is very successful. We plan to replicate this initiative in Fermoy and the Youth Centre beside the river is the ideal venue for our Men’s Retirement Group to meet every fortnight. We invite men from throughout the Fermoy and surrounding areas for a taste of classic hurling from Christy Ring (arguably Ireland’s greatest hurler) as well as many other greats who have played both hurling and football down through the years.
With many men having favourite matches they remember and would like to see again we will make every effort to secure such match footage. It is our intention to organise day trips for men as well as present speakers on many topics of interest to the men attending. If you would like to know more about the ‘Men’s group’ come along on the day to meet us in the ‘East Room’ and let us know what it is you would like from the group. Refreshments will be served and entrance fee is €3.
